it has just been confirmed that we have a 100% awesome real life American Revolutionary War Reenactor coming to the Khyber this evening to back up our historical accuracy. the art works all in and we're jazzed! 

like an exorcism, we're going to bring the ghost of patriotism out of your lungs.  by nights end you'll be perched on a rooftop wearing nothing but an american flag screaming "FREEDOM" and "LIBERTY" as if you couldnt control yourself. oh, it will be sweet. when the dust settles and you wipe the last drop of free pbr from your lips, you too will be overcome with MERICA and your heart will be complete.

also, Lizzy Janssen is having an amazing solo show right down the road at Vagabond in Old City (37 N. 3rd street). Under the influence of muggy summer nights, overgrown weeds, and the lackadaisical comfort of new moons she hands us a collection of drawings, and paintings that are perfect for a glass of lemonade or jumping on a trampoline in the middle of a field. this lovely corner of america (the compound) was politely invited to curate and host an art show in another lovely corner of america (upstairs @ The Khyber) and we lovingly excepted.

come to 56 S. 2nd street this friday night for a once in an evening opportunity to celebrate what we are affectionately calling "independence eve" because we are true patriotic-red-blooded-flag-flying-hippy-hating-thumbs-up-giving-xenophobic heros of the world!

there will be paintings, drawings, and a bunch of other stuff from a bunch of wonderful americans, a few of english girls trying to gain it all back, and absolutely no commies. oh. and if thats not all, theres free beer thanks to the wonderful people at Pabst Blue Ribbon (thanks ya'll!).

so come ring in the greatest day on earth from 7-10, July 3rd! we'll see you there with art on!

Much thanks to everyone that made it down to the philadelphias historic navy yard for our show at the urban outfitters gallery at their home office. thats a lot of long location names and for a first sentence, and for that, i apologize.

I really love participating in group shows that showcase individual vision, there always seems to be something for everyone, and i love it even more when those participating are also some of my best friends, studio mates, and gallery running cohorts. whereas our artistic third eyes are typically turned on to different influences, the mix and match of our work and its varied direction portrayed the vibe i get when i'm stooled up in my studio next to all these shitty people.

naturally i wanted to call the show "Jamaican me crazy, Compounding me hard', but no one else was really feeling that so we just went with "compound warehaus" which, i guess is much more of a descriptor than mine. heres a few pictures of the show...

bill sands killed it with these paper cut out collage pieces.

jason andrew turner "a light in the window is a crack in the sky" 1-25. i'm pretty jazzed on this series, i hope you are too.

erin broadhurst delved further into her stream of consciousness word drawings based on dreams and past tales.

more miriam singer. the piece on the right is my favorite drawing of hers, reminds me of the garden of earthly delights by hieronymus bosch which is never a bad thing.

TOY FACTORY OPENING

Andrew Johnson-Lally is good people. I've known him for a good minute now so it’s exciting to give this little introduction…

Andrew Johnson-Lally received his BFA in illustration/graphic design and a minor in art history from the Savannah College of Art and Design. That’s where I met him, where everyone knew him only as Black Metal Andrew and his common disposition was unharshed mellows and general good times, sharp as a tack and a unrelenting since of humor.
He’s been tattooing (I like calling it ink slangin, or giving tattoodles) since 2003 and currently sits in a chair on fourth street for Body Graphics putting pictures on people. He enjoys cats, denim, and standing on Scandinavian mountains doing inspirational poses. (see below)

His impressive artistic talent sits in the realm of crisp, technique driven paintings and drawings generally darker in subject matter. I am consistently knocked off my feet by his ability and wild imagination, which is why we at the Compound Warehaus are proud and pleased to host his very first Philadelphia Solo show entitled "The Faint Smell of Death" opening this Friday February 6th, 2009.
We extend the invitation to any and all to stop in check out the walls, meet the man, and enjoy our company. As usual it kicks off at 6 and rides into the night, treats and adult refreshments as always. Come start your February off right, it’ll end up being pretty epic.
